Estonian ministers got encrypted iPhones

BC, Tallinn, 16.04.2015.Print version
At the proposal of the Information Board, the new Estonian government's ministers were given mobile phones that use encrypted data communications, which they must use when they want to communicate information meant for the institution's internal use, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

These are iPhones with special security settings, said the government's media advisor Helin Vaher. "What the security settings consist of is not information to be disclosed," she said.

Ministers don’t have to give up phones that they use now as they have to use the encrypted phones only for communicating confidential information.

Estonian authorities have already received a lesson that ministers' phones could be tapped. A phone call between Former Foreign Minister Urmas Paet and the then European Union Foreign Affairs and Security Policy High Representative Catherine Ashton was loaded on YouTube a few years ago.

The then Riigikogu Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Marko Mihkelson commented that this was the sort of work Russian special services do.
