The Sanctions Map is a digital gift to the European Commission from the
Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU, the ministry said in a press
release.
"In two months, more than 77,000 people have used the application. We
have also been thanked by companies, journalists, officials, universities and
many others," Mikser said.
Sanctions oblige companies and citizens of member states to refrain from
certain activities. It is therefore important to provide the public with clear
information on obligations to the EU private and public sector that arise from
sanctions.
"Every year, around 90 decisions related to sanctions are made in the
EU in complex legal forms," Mikser noted. "Estonia as a digital
society saw an opportunity to use its experience and turn this complex topic
into a clear and understandable e-solution," the minister added.
According to Mikser, in future the Sanctions Map could be used as an
example to develop other e-solutions for translating EU policies into more
easily understandable forms.
The Sanctions Map was launched at the Tallinn Digital Summit on Sept. 29.
The Commission will start maintaining the EU Sanctions Map from Jan. 1, 2018.
