In closer future one may see robot swarms substituting humans, as an EU funded project ROBOSWARM, initiated and prepared by Estonia-based research and development (R&D) company Invent Baltics, was tested successfully swarm coordination technology demonstrator, Invent Baltics reports.

The objective of the ROBOSWARM project was to develop a technology for robot swarms usable in domestic and public area applications – cleaning, patrolling, escorting and other.

The innovative project engaged nine partners from seven different countries and received 2,1 million euros co-funding for research and development from Framework Programme 7, writes LETA.

A three-year project came to an end with successful demonstrator, where a swarm of simple robots carry out the cleaning tasks. Positioning and navigation was assisted by fixed RFID tags, which mark different surfaces and objects, and are used by robots for task sharing and coordination. The technology has engaged interest also from Microsoft research centre.

Innovation agency Invent Baltics was founded in 2006 to offer a wide variety of consulting services to businesses and R&D organizations across Europe.
