Modesat opens office in Silicon Valley

Juhan Tere, BC, Tallinn, 05.02.2009.Print version
Anticipating rising demand for higher-capacity wireless radio links, Modesat Communications, a developer of innovative high-throughput modem technology in Estonia, announced the opening of its US office in Silicon Valley. The move brings the company closer to US customers who will benefit from its PilotSync™ based high-capacity microwave and Full Gigabit™ Ethernet modem DSP Cores.

Demand for mobile services is not expected to be substantially affected by the global slowdown and the introduction of new mobile phones and handheld devices such as the iPhone will stimulate the broader use of 3G/4G services.

It is estimated that European carriers will spend approximately $270 billion to upgrade their networks for 3G services. In the United States and Asia 2.5G/3G upgrade expenditures may exceed $100 billion and $50 billion, respectively. Although the US is somewhat lagging behind Europe in adopting 3G, it is still the second largest region in the world for the deployment of next generation networks.

Modesat Communications provides FPGA-based high capacity modulator-demodulator DSP Cores for PDH/SDH and Ethernet links based on its patented PilotSync technology. This new technology significantly increases data throughput by permitting the use of adaptive high order modulation schemes (up to 1024QAM or greater), maintaining operability at very poor communication link conditions (down to SNR as low as –6 dB) and ensuring high reliability.

In anticipation of rising demand for higher capacity in wireless microwave and Gigabit Ethernet radio links, Modesat Communications has established a US office at the Sunnyvale-based PlugandPlay Technology Center. Being in Silicon Valley helps the company to better serve OEM customers who seek to increase the capacity of their radio links at little additional cost.

“Opening up an office in Silicon Valley reflects our great interest in the US market,” said BC Modesat CEO Peep Põldsamm. “We are determined to cooperate actively with US network equipment makers in providing high throughput mobile backhaul and last mile modem solutions.”

Modesat’s unique technology, which for instance enables to provide Full Gigabit capacity at twice the coverage area compared to existing solutions, has the potential of winning high interest from US-based OEMs” said Manish Sinha, Modesat’s Account Manager for the US & Canada.

“Plug and Play is happy to welcome Modesat as part of its community, as we feel it has a great potential and we hope to help them accelerate in the US market,” said Maud Pasturaud, Business Relationship Manager at Plug and Play. “We are the biggest technology center in Silicon Valley. Plug and Play’s start-ups have raised $700 million in its three years of existence. And we hope to build more success stories such as Melodis, Sendori, Lending Club, or Echovox, and to accelerate the success of top European start-ups.”
