Estonia sees biggest employment growth in EU in Q3

Among EU member states for which data are available, Estonia registered the biggest increase in employment in the third quarter of 2015 compared with the previous three-month period, Eurostat said on December 15th.

Next after Estonia, which posted employment growth of 2.1%, came Hungary with 0.8%, and Ireland, Spain, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom, all with 0.6%. Decreases were recorded in Croatia, 0.6%, Portugal, 0.5%, and Malta, 0.3%, reports LETA/BNS.

 

The number of persons employed increased by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU28 in the third quarter of 2015 compared with the previous quarter, according to national accounts estimates published by Eurostat.

 

Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, employment increased by 1.1% in both the euro area and the EU28 in the third quarter of 2015.

 

Employment in Lithuania rose by meager 0.2% in the third quarter from the previous quarter, and the quarterly growth pace was one of the slowest across the European Union (EU).

 

Smaller increases were only recorded in Belgium, France and Finland (0.1% each). Employment in Latvia ticked up by 0.2%.

 

Meanwhile, employment in Estonia rose by 2.1%, which was the largest increase in the EU.

 

Quarterly declines in the number of persons employed were recorded in Croatia (0.6%), Portugal (0.5%) and Malta (0.3%). In Bulgaria and the Czech Republic, employment rates remained unchanged.

 

Year-on-year, employment increased by 0.1% in Lithuania, by 2.4% in Latvia and by 4.4% in Estonia in the third quarter.

 

In the EU-28, employment rose by 0.4% quarter-on-quarter and by 1.1% year-on-year. In the euro area, the respective growth rates were 0.3% and 1.1%.
