Freight transport by rail by type of transport (mln t)

Compared to the same period of previous year, volume of national freights by rail has decreased by 17.3 thsd t (5.4 %) and comprised 0.3 mln tons. In its turn, in international transportation by rail – 13 mln t of freights were transported or less by 0.9 mln t (6.6%) compared to the 1^st quarter of 2009. 79.3 % of the total international freight haulage was accounted for by transportation through Latvian ports.

In the 1^st quarter of 2010 freight transport by road has increased – 8.9 mln tons of freights were transported, and it is 19.8 % more if compared to the 1^st quarter of 2009.

The bulk (81.2 %) of the total volume of freight was carried by the national transport totalling 7.2 mln tons of freight, rise of 1.1 mln t (18.6 %) on the 1^st quarter of 2009. Compared to the previous year international freight transportation by road in the 1^st quarter of 2010 has increased by 25.3 % – 1.7 mln tons of freight were carried.

In the 1^st quarter of 2010 37.3 % (3.3 mln tons) of total freight transport by road were comprised by products of agriculture and forestry, fish and other fishing products, 17.9 % (1.6 mln tons) – by metal ores and other mining and quarrying products and peat, 16.2 % (1.4 mln tons) – by wood and products of wood and cork (except furniture), pulp, paper and paper products, printed matter and recorded media.

The freights transported by road are in transport on own account and in transport for hire or reward. In the 1^st quarter of 2010 5.8 mln tons of the freight was carried for hire or reward, which is an increase of 42.2 % compared to January-March of the previous year. 3.1 mln tons of freights were carried in transport on own account, a decrease of 8 % on the 1^st quarter of 2009.

 In the 1^st quarter of 2010 by the oil products pipeline 1.5 mln tons of oil products were transported, rise of 1.1 % on January-March of previous year.

In the 1^st quarter of 2010, compared to the first three months of 2009, passenger transportation in public transport has reduced.

In the 1^st quarter of 2010 4.9 mln passengers were carried by rail, which is a decrease of 12.6 % compared to the 1^st quarter of the previous year. Compared to the same period of previous year, the number of passengers carried by the national transport has decreased by 12.9 %, but in international traffic – increased by 11.2 %.

In the 1^st quarter of 2010 31.4 mln passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines, which is a decrease of 23.5 % compared to the 1^st quarter of the previous year. The majority of these passengers (99.7 %) were carried by the national bus traffic. The number of passengers in national transport, compared to January – March 2009, has decreased by 23.6 %, but the number of passengers in the lines of international buses has decreased by 8.3 %.
