Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 03.06.2011.Print version
Ex-President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers was aware of the possible election of Andris Berzins. Nevertheless, yesterday's vote will convey a negative signal to the populace, Zatlers said in an interview with Latvian State Television.

Andris Berzins.

"When I proposed Saeima's dissolution, I was aware that my chances of being re-elected will decrease," said Zatlers. The president, however, pointed out that society has experienced many changes and become much more active during the recent days.

The president declined to comment on his future plans and emphasized that, after such victories and losses, time is required in order to reconsider the situation. "First of all, I will continue to work. Tasks are planned until July 8," said Zatlers.

The president also noted that today's vote was similar to the vote on the requested search of MP Ainars Slesers (For a Good Latvia) home. Most likely, Berzins was elected by the same political forces, said Zatlers.

"Today's (editor – 2 June) vote was a negative signal. It shows that there is a connection, and the Slesers' vote was no coincidence," emphasized Zatlers.

Zatlers also thanked the people for their support, as well as those deputies who voted for him.

The newly-elected president of Latvia, Andris Berzins, fielded some tough questions from a crowd of reporters at a press conference in Saeima afterwards.

Several correspondents mentioned the matter of oligarchs, and Berzins declared that he has felt no influence from them in his experience as chairman of the Economic Committee – "not counting the fact that Ainars Slesers sits on the committee."

"If President Zatlers has information to the contrary, he can make corresponding announcements," he said.

"If someone hopes that I will led by a leash, then I say – it won't happen," said Berzins. He also commented that feels like a president "elected by the people", promising to do more than the duties set for a president in the Constitution.

As reported, Andris Berzins (Union of Greens and Farmers) was elected as the new president of Latvia.

53 Saeima deputies voted for Berzins during the second vote of the presidential election today – 44 against. The other candidate – the current President Valdis Zatlers received support from 41 deputies, whilst 56 voted against him.

Three deputies voted against both candidates.

99 Saeima members participated in the vote, submitting 97 valid ballots.
