Lithuania's minimum monthly wage to make EUR 289 from 2013

BC, Vilnius, 19.12.2012.Print version
On Wednesday, the Government of Lithuania led by Social Democrat Algirdas Butkevicius approved of the proposition to increase minimum monthly wage (MMA) to LTL 1,000 (EUR 289) as of January 1, 2013, informs LETA/ELTA.

The minimum hourly wage was set at LTL 6.06 (EUR 1.7).

"We start work by implementing the commitments made to our electorate. The increase of minimum monthly wage will help to eliminate social exclusion which recently has been growing rapidly, "said Butkevicius.

This decision is expected to help fight against the black economy: the part of the illegal earnings will be legalized, the contributions to the state social insurance and health insurance funds will grow together with social guarantees for employees.

It is estimated that the increase of MMA will affect around 200,000 employees, including about 50,000 employees of budgetary institutions.
