Ban Ki-moon praised Latvia's involvement in the UN agenda to help secure peace and human rights worldwide. More specifically, the Secretary General pointed out that Latvia has been of assistance in implementing defined objectives. He also lauded Latvia's recovery from the economic crisis.
Ban Ki-moon appealed for emergency aid for typhoon-scarred Philippines, saying that "now is the right time for the international community to join hands."
In talks today with President Andris Berzins, the UN leader also touched upon the situation in Afghanistan, and the UN-Latvian partnership. Berzins expressed his gratitude to the UN for the support Latvia was shown immediately following independence. The Latvian leader noted that his country over the years has switched from a recipient to a donor.
Ban Ki-moon invited the president to take part in the meeting in September 2014 on climate changes.
The Secretary General is on a Baltic tour; he will also visit Estonia and Lithuania.
