Study: Estonian companies except increase in e-commerce

BC, Tallinn, 14.05.2014.Print version
A Swedbank poll among Estonian retail trade companies indicated that although e-commerce is currently mostly the field of operations for companies selling specialized goods, the share of e-commerce in retail trade is expected to grow to 21%, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Although companies say that development of e-commerce is hampered mainly by low trust towards e-commerce and the habit of consumers to physically try things, investments are planned in the coming years for IT solutions and marketing e-stores.

56% of the polled retail trade companies plan to expand their retail space or open new stores in the next two years but just 5% said they intend to open an e-store in the next two years.

Nearly a third of Estonian retailers are already involved in e-commerce to some extent.

Although many specialised goods sellers have an Internet solution, the share of e-commerce in their sales forms up to 5% in 2014.

Companies estimate that the share of e-commerce forms 12% of all purchases made Estonia now but in three years it should form 21%, including purchases made from both local and foreign e-stores by Estonians.

Nearly 150 retail trade companies participated in the study.
