Transparency school has been organised in Lithuania for the fifth time. This year it attracted 130 participants from 60 countries.
"We must join forces to fight against corruption. All of us must demand higher transparency and honesty both in politics and in everyday environment. The contribution of the youth is crucial, from educational projects to combating vote buying. Joint efforts have already resulted in concrete actions and contributed to creating a more transparent Lithuania," said the President.
During the five year tenure on Grybauskaite's initiative tighter legal framework and new measures to combat corruption were established – funding of political parties became more transparent, illegal enrichment was criminalised, broader asset seizure was legalised, limitation periods were prolonged and fines were increased.
Society was granted access to information about persons working in the public sector by making declarations of private interests' public.
The president's initiatives also contribute to transparency relating to public procurement and fight against negligence of judges. Rotation of heads of courts, law enforcement and other state institutions has begun in practice.
