A senior officer of the Defence Forces, major Eero Kinnunen was the first Estonian to be decorated by NATO for special services at the NATO operation in Afghanistan, writes the National Broadcasting/LETA.

Major Kinnunen was decorated with a medal for his service as the chief of the Estonian infantry company Estcoy-5 in Helmand province in Southern Afghanistan which is considered as one of the most difficult places for service.

The NATO medal for special services is granted to members of defence forces who have participated in NATO operations and who have shown more initiative and dedication than required and whose contribution has been important for fellow combatants as well as for NATO as a whole.
