EU health commissioner says he will look for solutions for problems in EU trade with Russia

The European Union Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou said at a press conference today that he would be looking for solutions for problems in the EU trade with Russia.

At the press conference that Kyprianou gave after a meeting with Agriculture Minister Martins Roze
(Union of Greens and Farmers), the commissioner said that the EU would speak to Russia about the lengthy truck lines at the EU-Russia border and the possible solutions for the problem.

The commissioner said that discussed should be not only drawing up a bilateral agreement on freight control on the EU-Russia border, the problem should be tackled at the political level.

Roze said that today he and the commissioner discussed maximum permissible benzopyrene level in canned sprats produced in Latvia, and Latvia
's position on plant protection.

Kyprianou commended Latvia on its contribution to vaccinating animals against rabies, and said that forming a special zone in the frontier areas with Russia and Belarus
should be considered where animals would be vaccinated against rabies.

Kyprianou also said that Latvia had done very much in curbing the spread of salmonellosis, however, the efforts must be continued.
