President Valdis Zatlers has congratulated United States (U.S.) Senator Barack Obama with his victory in yesterday's U.S. presidential elections, LETA was informed by the president's press service.

''Barack Obama is Latvia's friend, because he previously expressed his support for Latvia. One of his support initiatives was his participation in the recent U.S. Senate Resolution, which emphasized the illegality of the Soviet occupation of Latvia,'' Zatlers pointed out.

The U.S. resolution was passed this past September.

Latvia has always enjoyed the support of Democrat and Republican administrations, thus the Latvian president is confident on the continued strengthening of relations between Latvia and the United States.

Latvia awaits that Obama's victory in the elections will lead to closer cooperation between North America and Europe.

As reported, in Tuesday's U.S. presidential elections, Democrat Party candidate Barack Obama defeated Republican Party candidate John McCain.
