Estonia supported a hospital in Afghanistan

BC, Tallinn, 18.02.2009.Print version

Logistics and infantry company of the Estonian Defence Forces serving in Afghanistan organised the delivery and handing over of medical supplies donated by Estonia to a hospital in the Helmand province in Afghanistan, writes Postimees Online/LETA.

The medical supplies were handed over to a hospital in Lashkar Gah, the capital in the Helmand province in the framework of a development co-operation between Estonia and Afghanistan.

"Success in Helmand can only be achieved in close integration of military operations and reconstruction works. This is why co-operation between members of the Estonian Defence Forces and those developing the development aid in the regional medicine sector is natural," said the chief of the Estonian contingency serving in Afghanistan, lieutenant colonel Sten Reimann. He added that the Estonian contingency has proper logistics capacity throughout the logistical chain and operates in close co-operation with the British colleagues.

Argo Parts, M.D., the health care expert of Estonia's Special Mission to Afghanistan, stated that the medical machinery donated by Estonia will make it possible to launch the oxygen supply system in the operating block and in intensive care wards.

Estonian Defence Forces have been participating in the NATO-led military operation in Afghanistan since 2003. It has supported the Helmand province with medical aid since 2007.
