Estonian women’s organisations: ministry not active enough towards violence against women
Representatives of member organisations of the Estonian Round Table of Women’s Organisations found that the development plan for the fight against violence that has been drafted by the Ministry of Justice completely ignores violence against women, writes LETA/National Broadcasting.
At the meeting that took place in Tallinn on Sunday, the women’s organisations decided to demand that the Government without delay prepare a separate development plan to prevent violence against women and ensure the implementation of the plan with the necessary resources.
“The Estonian Government that wants to have the European single currency – the euro – be adopted in the country by the beginning of next year, should also share the common European values,” noted the round table in its press release.
The association of organisations pointed out that the Council of Europe is currently drafting a convention for preventing and fighting against violence against women and against family violence. “At the same time, the Ministry of Justice consistently asserts that there is no need for the specific measures for fighting the violence against women in Estonia,” noted the association.
The round table noted that women’s organisations that were involved in drafting the development plan against violence for the years 2010-2014 submitted numerous proposals, but the ministry failed to take almost any of them into account.
