Estonian national football team is aspiring for a unique record

The Estonian national football team is close to posting a unique record: namely Estonia is becoming the first state in Europe to have played with all members of the European Football Association UEFA, Postimees/LETA writes.

UEFA includes now 53 states together with Estonia and the Estonian national team has played with 51 of them, meaning that the only one they have not played with is 1998 World Champion France.

Since Estonia is rather close to the unique record, work is being done to make the friendship match with France happen. The Estonia Football Association’s President Aivar Pohlak said that they hope that the match could take place next season or the season after the next.

Before France, the teams Estonia had not yet played with were Spain and Serbia, with whom matches were held in the World Championships and European Championships qualifier rounds.

“France is now the first state that we are trying to reach an agreement with for specifically to have played with all UEFA members,” said Pohlak. If no agreement with the French can be reached over a friendship game, the hopes are on France being in the same qualifier group with Estonia in the next World Championships qualifier tournament.

The closest “runner-ups” after Estonia in this race are Germany and Poland who have not played with three UEFA members.
