Latvian Olympic Committee informs that Latvia's first Olympic champion, president of Latvian Olympians Club, Doctor of Medicine Inese Jaunzeme passed away on February 13.

Jaunzeme won gold in javelin throw at Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956.

Jaunzeme was a very popular and respected personality in Latvia, known not only as a legendary athlete but also as a skillful surgeon and lecturer at the Latvian Academy of Medicine.

In the 1990s, Jaunzeme actively participated in the restoration of the Latvian Olympic Committee, she was also one of the initiators of what is now known as the nationwide clean-up campaign, held every spring.
