62% Latvian residents celebrate Midsummer holiday according to folk traditions
62% economically-active Latvian residents celebrate the Midsummer "Jani" or "Ligo!" holiday according to folk traditions, usually – by bonfires, according to a study carried out by the market, social and media research company TNS Latvia.
23% of respondents do not observe any Midsummer traditions, whilst seven% do not celebrate "Ligo" at all. 8% had no opinion.
52% usually lit bonfires during the holiday, 47% eat traditional "Jani" cheese with caraway seeds, 45% brew or drink beer, 34% sing and listen to "Ligo" folk songs, 32% weave crowns of flowers or oak leaves, 24% jump over bonfires, writes LETA.
Only 9% of respondents actually stay awake until the sunrise, seven% gather traditional "Jani" herbs, decorate rooms with flowers, grill meat, search for the mystical fern blossom, dance.
