Estonian Film 100 year kicks off today
The events of the theme-year ‘Estonian Film 100’ will be launched on Friday in Tartu, the city where Estonian film was first “born”, writes LETA/National Broadcasting.
The Estonian National Museum invites people to visit its exhibition to see the first film scenes shot in Estonia, but will also talk of collecting cultural heritage a century ago in comparison to modern times and will introduce the programme for the Year of Film.
Johannes Pääsuke who was born in Tartu in 1892 gave Estonia its first documentary film “Utotchkin Flying in Tartu on April 14 and April 15, 1912”. Two years later, he shot the first feature film titled “Bear-hunting in the Pärnu County” (‘Karujaht Pärnumaal’). Pääsuke has also contributed films documenting life in Estonia and a unique photographic heritage that has been maintained in the archives of the Estonian National Museum.
Pääsuke visited many sites with two cameras at once – a photocamera (13x18 cm) and a film camera, photographing and filming at the same location simultaneously. This work has brought more than a thousand photos in the archives of the Estonian National Museum, recording life in the Seto region, in Tartu, from Narva to Haapsalu along the Northern Coast and from the islands, from Kuivastu to the Sõrve Peninsula.
