Relations between Latvia and Belgium are good, however, there is still much potential for closer economic ties between the two countries, new Foreign Minister Girts Valdis Kristovskis said yesterday during a meeting with the Belgian Ambassador to Latvia Leopold Merckx, who arrived on an introductory visit.

As LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry's press center, the two sides also discussed the development of bilateral relations between Latvia and Belgium, as well as current European affairs.

''The crisis, from which we are finally coming out of, is a time of possibilities, which make us rethink and restructure our economic activities,'' the minister said, urging Belgian investors to invest in Latvia.

Both Kristovskis and Merckx were in agreement that the two sides have had successful cooperation between ports, and that this area should be developed further. The two sides agreed that there have been successful cooperation projects implemented at the Port of Ventspils, and Merckx informed that work is being done to develop bilateral cooperation at the Port of Liepaja.

The officials also agreed that Latvia and Belgium could develop cooperation in the energy sector, especially in relation to renewable energy.
