The Latvian and Estonian prime ministers strongly support introduction of visa-free regimes for those Eastern Partnership countries who have met all the necessary criteria – Ukraine and Georgia, Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers) and Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas agreed during their meeting in Tallinn on June 7th, cites LETA/BNS.

Kucinskis’ spokesman Andrejs Vaivars told that the heads of governments during their meeting also discussed the economic cooperation between both countries. They agreed that the agreement among the three Baltic States about the European-gauge railway project, Rail Baltica, should be finalized and signed as soon as possible.

The prime ministers during the meeting also discussed the upcoming NATO Warsaw Summit and voiced hopes that decisions favorable to the Baltic States will be made during the summit, supporting increase of the NATO presence in the region.

According to Roivas, the upcoming NATO Warsaw Summit is the most important meeting for reinforcing the region since the 2002 Prague summit. "Our goal in Warsaw is to strengthen the decisions adopted in Wales – air policing at Amari, a NATO base in Estonia, rapider NATO rapid reaction forces – and to achieve a stronger NATO presence in the region," Roivas said.

"Georgia and Ukraine have fulfilled the criteria and must therefore be granted visa-freedom as soon as possible – the credibility of the European Union is at stake here," Roivas said, adding that it is not acceptable to constitute new additional conditions afterwards.

As previously reported, M. Kucinskis is paying a visit to Tallinn to meet the Estonian Prime Minister T. Rõivas, participate in the meeting of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and visit the Digital Governance Exhibition Centre (e-Estonia showroom).
