Belarus and Latvia to develop the Daugava River Basin
During the meeting, Chairman of the Board of JSC Energy and Water Transport, which is initiator of the Daugava basin long-term development project, Uldis Pumpurs, and the economist and Member of the Board, Uldis Osis, pointed out the economic perspectives of the Daugava River development project, as well as the importance in the regional infrastructure development, reported BC Ilona Kuzmica.
„The development of the Daugava River basin in the long-term has a huge economic potential both in Latvia and Belarus. Cooperation between the two countries on the governmental level is a significant step towards acknowledgment of this potential. We are pleased that the agreement reached during the IGC meeting provides an opportunity to form the working group, which will arrange the thorough research of the project, including the regional infrastructure development opportunities, the Daugava River technical capacity and other significant data. We are sure that evaluating the project opportunities and the necessary resources, the development of the Daugava River basin may become an engine for the Latvian-Belorussian economic development, stressed Mr. Osis.
JSC Energy and Water Transport began negotiations with Belarus in august in order to assess the benefits of both countries – both in a long-term development economic perspective, environmental preservation and friendly utilization of the river’s resources.
About the ProjectThe main goal of the Project is to develop the Daugava basin (with tributaries of other rivers) by using the river’s economic potential in environmentally-friendly way, including the power, transportation and other opportunities, as well as to preserve its unique environment, and to make the Daugava River basin more available for economically active activities and recreation, in correspondence with the Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of 23 October, 2000, (Water Framework Directive), and other EU regulatory documents
