One winner of the "Latvian Literature Annual Award 2012" was announced today – the prolific prose author Alberts Bels (b.1938), who is being cited for lifetime achievement, reports LETA.

Bels, who began his career in 1963, has written 22 books, and several of his novels have made it to the silver screen.

Speaking to reporters today, Bels said that he is "pleasantly surprised" at receiving the award, but "wary" because it is for lifetime achievement. "Now I have to see what comes next. God given, I will write some more."

In conclusion, Bels urged people to do as he does – "not to take literature so seriously."
