Rejoicing over the progress in the path towards ensuring energy independence, President Dalia Grybauskaite highlights the importance of liquefied gas terminal, renewable energy sources and modern waste incineration, informed BC presidential press service.

Energy independence was one of the topics discussed by the president and members of the Seimas National Security and Defence Committee on Wednesday.

"Lithuania's energy independence is one of the most important guarantors and aspects of political independence," Presidential Spokesperson Linas Balsys said.

According to President Dalia Grybauskaite, Lithuania is on the path of energy independence: it has a power exchange, important steps are made in the building of electric bridges to Sweden, there is a slight shift in relations with Poland in this area, electricity networks are technically no longer dependent on Russia.

"The need to construct a liquefied gas terminal in Lithuania as soon as possible that would be a good alternative to dependence on Russian energy sources was highlighted, the necessity to focus on the development of alternative energy in Lithuania was also discussed. This includes biofuel and a civilized waste incineration, using modern technologies by sorting waste and monitoring the quality of the process," Balsys said.
