Zatlers and Turkish Grand National Assembly speaker discuss energy issues

Latvian President Valdis Zatlers met on February 4 with the chairman of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Mehmet Ali Sahin, who is on an official visit to Latvia, LETA was informed by the State Chancery.

The president thanked Turkey as a trustworthy NATO ally for taking part in airspace monitoring in the Baltic States.

 

Zatlers also spoke about the fine bilateral relationship between the two countries, pointing out that even during the economic crisis, trade volumes between Latvia and Turkey did not shrink. Zatlers also emphasized Turkey’s important role in diversifying routes of energy supplies in Europe.

 

On the other hand, Sahin thanked the president for his welcome. He said that Turkish investors are increasingly interested in the Latvian market, and added that he welcomes the positive views of his compatriots about life in Latvia.

 

The two officials also discussed Turkey’s movement toward the European Union. They also talked about issues related to North Africa and the Middle East, particularly focusing on recent events in Egypt and Tunisia. The president and Sahin also discussed the possibility of visits to Latvia by high-ranking Turkish officials in 2011.
