Sekmokas: Lithuania has opportunity to build a nuclear power plant until 2020

Lithuania still has all the potential to have a new nuclear power plant in 2020, Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas is convinced.

Arvydas Sekmokas.

"I am doing everything possible for Lithuania to have its own nuclear power plant in 2020. However it is not possible to guess whether there will really be a 100% possibility. It is politicians, scientists or magicians who should be asked, but I believe we have every opportunity to have a nuclear power plant," Sekmokas said.

According to the minister, the project will be implemented only if the country is unanimous on the issue, writes LETA.

"There should be an absolute unity, political unity, a unanimous public opinion, because projects of such scale cannot be implemented on the initiative of an individual person. We have to have political will, I think that we do have it, and this is the most important condition," Sekmokas said.

When asked what would happen to the project if the minister lost his post in the interpellation against him, Sekmokas pointed out that the project would not be affected.

"The project will be implemented regardless of whether I will be the minister, or there will be another minister. Again, I want to point out that it depends not on a single person, but on political will," Sekmokas said.
