Kaliningrad, together with the entire Russian Federation, is interested in Ignalina nuclear power plant (AE) further functioning after 2009, because, when the AE is closed, they will face the shortage of electricity. The Russian Government approved the erection of a nuclear power plant in Kaliningrad district, which would start operating in 5-7 years after the construction work.

Konstantin Poliakov.

On Tuesday, in Kaliningrad, Konstantin Poliakov, first deputy chairman of Kaliningrad district Duma, and Kaliningrad District Deputy Prime Minister Jurij Salimov indicated these plans to Social Democratic MEP Justas Paleckis, reports ELTA.

According to Poliakov, Kaliningrad is also interested in joining the common European energy ring.

It is officially reported about the plans to build the power plant in Kaliningrad in 2012-2015.

Paleckis told the representatives of Kaliningrad Government about the Lithuanian Government"s effort to reach the agreement with Brussels over the extension of the operation of Ignalina AE. However, he emphasised that it might be futile to have high hopes over this, and it is necessary to prepare for the future situation when the nuclear power plant is closed at the end of 2009.

During the meetings, the MEP also discussed the visa facilitation issue. Lithuania joined the Schengen zone at the end of 2007 and free visas started to cost up to 35 euros for the Lithuanians and the residents of Kaliningrad district. This change has aggravated business, scholarly, cultural and tourism relations between Lithuania and Kaliningrad.
