Latvia registered highest proportion of renewable energy use in EU in 2009

In 2009, Latvia registered the highest proportion of renewable energy use in the European Union, according to data from the European Union's statistics office Eurostat. 36.5% of the energy consumed in Latvia was renewable in 2009.
Sweden had the second highest proportion of renewable energy use in the EU in 2009 – 34.4%, followed by Austria – 23.2%.
On the other hand, the lowest proportion of renewable energy use is in Luxembourg – 2.8%, followed by Great Britain – 3%, and Cyprus – 3.5%. Malta is the only EU country were renewable energy is not produced at all.
The proportion of renewable energy use in Lithuania in 2009 was 10.5%, but in Estonia – 13.5%.
The total proportion of renewable energy use in the whole EU was 9% in 2009, compared to 5.4% in 1999.
