On 17 August in Vilnius, Political director of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Eitvydas Bajarunas met with Climate and Energy Security Envoy of the Government of the United Kingdom, Rear Admiral Neil Morisetti. Energy security issues were the main topic of the discussion, the Ministry said. The participants of the meeting spoke about the concerns of Lithuania related to non-transparent and inconsistent with international legal norms realisation of projects of nuclear power plants in Belarus and the Kaliningrad region of Russia. It was stressed that the nuclear energy does not pollute the environment only when developed responsibly and safely.

The meeting participants paid attention to the recent incident on 2nd Leningrad nuclear power plant under construction. According to them this is really worrisome because similar reactors are to be built near Lithuania.

The UK delegation members who participated in the meeting with Morisetti, showed interest in the issues of financing the closure of Ignalina nuclear power plant in the EU new financial programme for 2014-2020, developments in energy security during Lithuanian chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The key issues of energy security in Lithuania such as the implementation of strategic energy projects, bringing the Baltic region out from the energy isolation and challenges of climate change were also discussed at the meeting.

Morissetti expressed support for Lithuania's energy security aspirations and gave positive evaluation to the decision to establish a national Energy Security Centre. It is expected that in the future the centre can receive the status of NATO centre of competence. According to the Rear Admiral, NATO operations have strong energy dimension.

Morisetti came to Lithuania to discuss the possibilities for governments to participate more actively in tackling climate change and energy security problems.

In Lithuania the Rear Admiral also meets with the Minister of National Defence Rasa Jukneviciene, Minister of Energy Arvydas Sekmokas, director of Energy Security Centre Audrius Bruzga, LETA/ELTA reported.
