The entire international community should be responsible for the safe and reliable operation of nuclear plants, both within the EU and outside it, the Lithuanian president stressed in a Wednesday meeting with the EU commissioner for climate action in Vilnius.

During the meeting, President Dalia Grybauskaite and EU Commissioner Connie Hedegaard discussed preparations for talks on the EU's new financial perspective.

Lithuania seeks that the new financial perspective would guarantee proper funding for the important power and gas link projects in the Baltic States, functioning of the efficient and competitive energy system and security of nuclear power plants, Grybauskaite noted.

"We must pool our efforts to guarantee that only safe nuclear plants which meet the highest European standards operate in the European Union and in its neighbourhood. Stringent safety requirements should be applied not only to technologies, but also to construction sites and constant supervision of the operation of plants. To secure safe nuclear energy, the EU should speak with one voice in all international formats," Grybauskaite was quoted as saying during the meeting by the presidential press service.
