Linkevicius: discussions with NPP’s investor Hitachi could still bear fruit

BC, Vilnius, 07.02.2013.Print version
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius told the local Lithuanian news portal Delfi.lt that Lithuania has not abandoned discussions with the strategic investor of the Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant project Hitachi (Japan), and that these discussions could still bear fruit, informs LETA/ELTA.

''Discussions are taking place. The energy strategy will be reviewed, and I believe we could have results sometime in May. I personally believe that having a favorable attitude towards nuclear energy and in discussions with ''Hitachi'' could bear fruit, that is why we must not rush things. We must analyze the financial conditions, the supply of energy and the importance of energy independence, and then make a decision,'' Linkevicius said.

According to the minister, it is important to answer the question what type of nuclear power plant should be constructed, and if Lithuania is capable of finding a common language with regional partners, the project could be successful.

As reported, the new Algirdas Butkevicius government in Lithuania has not made a final decision on the nuclear power plant project.
