The European Commission has approved the addition of lamprey eel from Carnikava on its Protected Designations of Origin list, the Commission announced on February 20th, cites LETA.

The designation “increases the market value of the products of economic operators, by guaranteeing that they are distinguishable from other similar products or foodstuffs,” according to the European Commission’s description.

The town of Carnikava boasts about its lampreys and even hosts an annual festival for the eel-like fish.

Sklandrausis, a Latvian vegetable tart, as well as Latvian rye-bread have also been included on the list.
