Freight shipping by rail in Latvia up 12.5% in 2018

Last year, freight shipping by rail in Latvia increased by 12.5% y-o-y to 49.26 mln tons, according to the data released by the Transport Ministry.
Transportation of international rail freight increased by 13.7% against 2017 to 47.9 mln tons in 2018, while the amount of domestic freight carried by rail fell 17.3% to 1.36 mln tons.
Transportation of transit freight grew 14.8% y-o-y to 44.46 tons, import freight rose 1.7% to 3.12 mln tons and export freight dropped 10 percent to 316,700 tons.
The amount of rail freight shipped through Latvian ports grew 14% y-o-y to 39.41 mln tons in 2018, and deliveries of transit freight by land jumped 37.1% to 5.04 mln tons.
In 2017, transportation of rail freight in Latvia fell 8.4% from a year before to 43.792 million tons, which included 36.576 mln tons carried in the first ten months of 2017.
