Presidential elections in Latvia to take place on June 3

BC, Riga, 18.05.2015.Print version
Presidential elections will take place on Wednesday, June 3, the Saeima Presidium in Latvia decided today, informs LETA.

The emergency meeting of Saeima to elect the next President of Latvia will start at 10 a.m.

As reported, the coalition previously failed to agree on one joint presidential candidate. Greens/Farmers thus decided to nominate Raimonds Vejonis, whereas VL-TB/LNNK put forward Levits, urging other MPs to vote for him. Unity originally said it would support Vejonis, while several opposition MPs, for instance, Ringolds Balodis (For Latvia from the Heart), and Unity's Lolita Cigane said they would vote for Levits.

All For Latvia-For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK has said that the European Court of Justice Judge Egils Levits would make a good candidate.

Three opposition parties have also officially nominated their candidates for president: the Alliance of Regions of Latvia put forward Saeima member Martins Bondars, For Latvia from the Heart – MP Gunars Kutris, and the Harmony – MP Sergejs Dolgopolovs.
