Latvian police on high alert due to weekend's ''Ligo!'' holidays

Print versionFrom today to June 25, police will be on high alert during the ''Ligo!'' Midsummer night holidays (June 23-24), LETA was informed by State Police spokeswoman Vineta Mistre.

There will be a large police presence on roads throughout Latvia over the holidays, inspecting whether drivers are not under the influence of alcohol, as well as catching speeders.
Police patrols will not only be patrolling Latvia's main highways and regional roads, but local rural roads as well.
As reported, in the first five months of the year, there were 456 alcohol related road accidents registered in Latvia, which is more than double when compared to the same period in 2011.
Furthermore, alcohol related road accidents have taken the lives of 10 persons in the first five months of the year, compared to seven during the same period in 2011.
