BC, Riga, 04.11.2013.Print version
The Culture Ministry has confirmed that composer and former chief at Radio SWH, Zigmars Liepins, has been appointed the Latvian National Opera's new artistic director and board chairman. According to unofficial information obtained by LETA, Liepins was previously appointed the opera's third board member.

Six persons applied for the third and last place on the new board at the Latvian National Opera.

The candidates were assessed by a commission headed by Culture Ministry Parliamentary Secretary Inese Laizane (All For Latvia-For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK), Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music Professor Normunds Viksne, Latvian Academy of Culture Professor Ivars Berzins, Latvian Music Information Center Director Inara Jakubone, Latvia's Presidency of the Council of the European Union Secretariat representative Selga Laizane, Culture Alliance representative Juris Dambis, Culture Ministry Deputy State Secretary Uldis Lielpeters and Culture Ministry Judicial Department Deputy Head Juris Sumeiko.

The Ministry's new management structure for LNO liquidates the former top office of "managing director" in lieu of a three-person board. The third seat was to go to composer Arturs Maskats, as well as the chairmanship, but he declined amid the turmoil surrounding the opera's former artistic director Zagars.
