Estonian government will buy up to 500 tonnes of canned pork

BC, Tallinn, 29.10.2015.Print version
The Estonian government allocated to the Ministry of Rural Affairs 1.78 million euros for acquisition of state food stocks, for which up to 500 tonnes of canned pork will be bought, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

1.74 million euros is allocated for the purchase of pigs, meat industry service fees and production of canned products and 42,000 euros is allocated for rent of warehouse space and transportation costs.

Given that the spread of African swine fever in Estonia has created a difficult situation for the pig farmers in the third zone, the government has found it necessary to increase the food reserves to stabilize the pork market.

The food reserves are increased as canned pork originating from the third zone. That amount of money can produce up to 500 tonnes of canned pork.

The plan is to initially store the canned pork as physical inventories till the end of 2016.

Next year, the ministry will assess whether it is necessary to continue to store the canned pork as food stocks for emergency situations, sell them, give to the Defence Forces or distribute as social aid to people in need.
