Last year when 22,000 domestic pigs were killed as a result of the spread of the African swine fever (ASF), 32 pig farmers ended their business operations according to information of the Estonian Agricultural Registers and Information Board (PRIA), but the real number of such pig farmers may be even bigger since pig farmers themselves have to inform the board of their operations ending.

"It is possible that after May 1, 2015 such changes have taken place in pig farmers' households that the register has not been informed about," PRIA spokesperson Maris Sarv-Kaasik told BNS.
At the start of last year a total of 2,312 dairy cow farmers and 95,636 dairy cows were registered in Estonia, while on Jan. 1, 2016 the number had declined by respectively 250 and 5,151.
Sarv-Kaasik stressed that the number may not correspond with the real number of dairy cow farmers and dairy cows.
