Mobile phone operator Bite Group has signed an EUR 17 million agreement with the Chinese telecommunication systems maker HuaWei on modernization of its mobile telephony network in Latvia; download speeds in the Bite network will reach 21 megabits per second (Mbps) already in July in some areas, as Bite Group Chief Technology Officer Cristobal Alonso informed the business portal Nozare.lv on the phone from Shanghai.
Alonso confirmed that Bite Latvija would be provided with new HuaWei base stations and equipment to enable the use of 4G mobile Internet in Latvia, but the first step would be accelerating download and data transmission speeds in the 3G network to up to 21 Mbps, writes LETA.
The 4G pilot project could be launched in the first half of 2011, and the network will be fully prepared to work in the 4G regime in 2012, Alonso said.
To offer 4G download speeds of up to 100 Mbps in the new HuaWei network, Bite Latvija will only have to install new software, Alonso explained.
