Wood for heating more costly in Estonia in 2010

Firewood is increasing in price due to higher demand caused by colder winter in 2009-2010, according to an official with the economics ministry of Estonia.
Undersecretary for Energy of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications Einari Kisel said many people exhausted their supplies last year and now demand has spiked.
According to him, the price was not affected to any major degree by large energy producers as they rely mainly on wood chips and other waste from the timber industry. Some of the better-quality wood they use would still be suitable for home consumers, Kisel said.
He said high renewable energy subsidies played a large role. If the subsidies are reviewed, he said: "it is very likely firewood prices will drop as energy producers would not be able to buy firewood at a higher price."
