Record amount of EU food aid to be distributed in Estonia in 2012

The amount of European Union food aid that Estonian charity organizations applied for the year 2011 via EU aid distributor Agricultural Registries and Information Board (PRIA) is a record in 2012 – nearly 2,571 tons of cereals and other food products and 590,800 liters of rapeseed oil will be distributed to people in need, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The transport of the food aid started in June 20. AS Tartu Mill, which won the state procurement for the supplier of the food aid products, organizes acquisition-production, packaging, transport and loading the goods in the more than 100 places across Estonia that charity organisations have designated. The selection of products includes macaroni, oatmeal, four-grain cereal, wheat flour, rice, manna, sugar, rapeseed oil.

 

The deliveries take place till August 31 and the food has to be distributed to people in need by February 28 next year, PRIA announced.

 

16 charity organizations are involved in the project. In many cases the food reaches those in need in cooperation with local municipalities social workers. The organisations have planned to distribute food aid this year to around 129,500 people.

 

Last year, 10 charity organizations distributed 1,365 tons of cereals and products made of cereals to around 95,000 people.

 

The value of the food aid distributed in Estonia is 2.2 million euros which was allocated by the European Commission.
