Estonia fights against fine for exceeding milk quota

BC, Tallinn, 18.02.2014.Print version
Punishing milk producers for making efforts, with the support of a favourable market situation, in order to stay in competition in a situation without quota is not reasonable, Estonian agriculture minister Helir-Valdor Seeder said at the agriculture and fisheries council meeting on Monday in Brussels, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

"The additional financial pressure on producers in the last quota year is a problem for many countries and needs to be solved," said Seeder. "The number of countries that already exceed the quota or potentially reach that state is growing fast."

According to Estonia's proposal, the existing easing possibilities should be used and the milk fat content coefficient should be revised. The coefficient used for lower than the reference level fat content should be increased by around 2.5 times to prevent exceeding quota in Estonia.

The quota problem in the last quota year concerns the Baltic states, Austria, Ireland, Holland, Luxemburg, Poland, Belgium, Denmark and Germany.
