Lithuanian farmers bring back idea of fence along Belarus' border

On Wednesday, Minister of Agriculture Virginija Baltraitiene met with representatives of the Lithuanian Pig Producers Association to discuss measures to prevent spread of African swine fever (ASF), informs LETA/ELTA.

According to the Ministry, the association has brought back the idea of building a fence along the border with Belarus. Representatives of the association claim that this investment would prevent migration of wild boars and would reduce losses incurred by farmers.

"Pig-farming is one of those branches that have always been growing and developing, and now we notice a slowdown, yet I hope that our measures will help to overcome fever, and farmers will be able to return to this business so common in Lithuania," said the minister of agriculture.

The Ministry has underlined that it is important to reduce the population of wild boars. This decision is made not only by Lithuania but also by neighbouring Baltic countries and Poland. However, representatives of the association said they expected more active steps from the Ministry of Environment regarding wild boar hunting.

Representatives of the association noted that more attention should be paid to requirements of biosafety and controls on small pig farmers.

Previously the minister of agriculture and the head of State Food and Veterinary Service have said that building a fence along the border of Belarus is inexpedient.
