Today in Vilnius, Lithuanian and Latvian transport ministers have signed a joint application on behalf of the three Baltic States to receive funding for the Rail Baltica project under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), reports LETA/ELTA.

The application on Thursday morning was signed by Lithuania's Minister of Transport and Communications Rimantas Sinkevicius and Latvia's Minister of Transport Anrijs Matiss.

The deadline for submitting the application to the European Commission (EC) is 26 February. It is planned that the EC will assign up to 85% of the necessary funds.

Lithuanian transport minister said that Lithuania's share in the project will account for around EUR 190 million. A similar share is expected from Estonia, while Latvians will contribute to a slightly greater extent. In total, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia will ask about EUR 620 million from the EC under the CEF programme.

The European gauge railway will connect Helsinki, Tallinn, Riga, Kaunas, Vilnius and Warsaw with an extension to Berlin. The project part from Polish-Lithuania border to Tallinn is planned to be completed by 2024.
