The newly established Joint-Stock company Udens transporta sistema Riga-Hersona-Astrahana (Water transport system Riga-Herson-Astrahan) is planning to establish the connection between the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea via the rivers Daugava, Western Dvina and Dniepr, using also the man-built waterways and hydraulic structures, as LETA learned from the company's chairman of he board Uldis Pumpurs.

Besides Latvia, the initiator of the project, also the other European Union countries -Germany, France and United Kingdom -have shown interest about the plan; Belarus, Ukraine and Russia have already confirmed participation in the project.

"We have to make use of the resources that God has blessed our country with. We do not have gold or oil, but we do have a good geographic position, which we have to take advantage of, so that we could pay back the money that our country has now borrowed. If we bring this project to life, the State Treasury tax revenue will double. Within the framework of the project, presumably, three new hydro-electric power stations will be built and on the basis of consortium we will receive additional electric energy – around 600 megawatts from Belarus and Ukriane. We will not have to join the project of construction of a possibly hazardous new nuclear power plant in Lithuania. We have to use efficiently our own resources," Pumpurs underlined.

He pointed out that the Government and the Ministry for Economy should focus on boosting the economy, on production and creating of the added value.
