Liepaja Port records 4.6% rise in cargo turnover in 2009
In 2009, 1456 ships entered the Liepaja Port, or 32 ships more than in 2008.
As in the past years, dry cargo accounted for the bulk, 46%, of the Liepaja Port's cargo turnover. In 2009, 2 million tons of dry cargo was handled at the port, or 7.5% more than in 2008 – including 1.7 million tons of grain and grain products and also woodchips, construction materials and scrap metal.
The amount of general cargo handled at the Liepaja Port increased 21.4% to 1.72 million tons altogether. Wood, round timber, ferrous metal and peat flow through the port increased, but the largest increase was observed with ro-ro cargo thanks to the launch of the Liepaja-Luebeck ferry route in November 2008.
The amount of liquid cargo transshipped via the Liepaja Port decreased to 658,200 tons, mostly oil products and crude oil.
