Two bids were submitted for the international state procurement contest that should bring to Estonia 18 new electric and 10 diesel trains, LETA/Postimees Online reports. The two bidders were Stadler Bussnang AG (Switzerland) and Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles S.A. (Spain).

The state committee will now evaluate the bids.

Estonian electric railways operator Elektriraudtee declared the international procurement on June 18 last year. With the current procurement, Elektriraudtee will acquire 18 electric trains and 10 diesel trains. It will also have a possibility to acquire 10 more diesel trains if need be.

Trains will be procured by using the funds of the EU Cohesion Fund and the co-financing from the state budget. The European Commission approved of Elektriraudtee’s application on January 27.

Cohesion Fund covers 85% of the 1.3 bln kroons cost of the project and 15% will come from state budget.

The diesel trains will be acquired on the basis of a capital lease contract with the 20-year term of payment.

The electric trains should arrive in Estonia in 2012 – 2013 and diesel trains in 2013 – 2014.
