On Wednesday, a container ship Navi Baltic under the Cypriot flag docked at Klaipedos Konteineriu Terminalas with NATO shipments in 15 containers among others. This is the first NATO shipment that has entered the port of Klaipeda.

According to CEO of Klaipedos Konteineriu Terminalas (Klaipeda Container Terminal) Vaidotas Sileika, Navi Baltic, which arrived at the port of Klaipeda from the German port of Bremerhaven, carried a total of 519 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). According to him, all the containers are identical, reports LETA/ELTA referring to VE.lt.

The CEO of the terminal says that NATO's cargo will probably be transported to Afghanistan only next year.

American cargo owners now are to decide whether the cargo will be transported via Belarus or through the territory of Latvia (Riga Port). Klaipedos Konteineriu Terminalas is to receive another ship with NATO cargo next week. The terminal expects to unload 105 TEUs over December. The U.S. entrusted the transportation of its NATO shipments to Maersk Line.

Until now NATO cargo has been transported only through the Port of Riga. Successful shipment of the trial consignment through Lithuania would allow to expect regular volumes of this cargo in Klaipeda Port in 2011.
