Estonian Highways Board launches a new information system for drivers

Juhan Tere, BC, Tallinn, 30.12.2010.Print version
The Estonian Highways Board hopes to launch next year an electronic road information system that will warn drivers in real time on the web or via GPS devices in cars or via radio against anything that can obstruct traffic on roads, LETA/Eesti Päevaleht writes.

Andrus Kross from the Highways Board who is working on the development project Smart Road, said that currently the public information about road conditions and traffic restrictions is posted in several places on the internet and is sometimes hard to find.

Now the board aims to create a public web portal that consolidates any road information: warnings, information on road works, traffic detours, new traffic signs, road and weather conditions and possible traffic jams.

The new portal should be complete before the end of the 2011 and will cost around 5 million kroons.
